A True Friend: Lessons of Courage, Trust and Strength

A True Friend: Lessons of Courage, Trust and Strength

The cord of a good Friendship is not easily broken. Friendship is one of the most precious gifts life offers. Finding the right friend it’s a bond that transcends bloodlines, culture, and circumstance. But what makes a friend truly “true” is the outcome of the sacrifices made by the same friend to rescue the other.

How can you distinguish between a friend who will stand by you in your darkest hours and one who will abandon you at the first sign of trouble? You will get to know more as you read through this inspirational piece.

A recent video I came across on social media gave me a vivid answer—a monkey rescuing a dog from the jaws of a crocodile. This goes beyond just animals; it gives a deeper insight that if an animal could go that length to rescue another mammal, then humans should not be exempt.

In a moment of unimaginable danger, the monkey leapt into action, putting its own safety at risk to save its friend. Watching that act of courage, I realised that the essence of true friendship is action, sacrifice, and unwavering loyalty. Loyalty? Yes, unwavering Loyalty is significant in knowing a true friendship.

Who is a True Friend?

There are many factors to be considered to know who true friendship really look like.

  • A true friend gives up his opportunity to favour his friend.
  • A true friend is more than just someone who laughs with you during happy moments or shares casual conversations.
  • A true friend is someone who is qualified for something but wishes to give it to their friend instead.
  • They are the people who stand by you when life tests your strength and resilience. True friends demonstrate loyalty, trustworthiness, empathy, and integrity
  • A true friend celebrates your victories without envy.
  • A true friend comforts you in your losses without judgment, and challenges you to grow without resentment.
  • A true friend speaks your voice even when others castigate you.
  • A true friend stands by you when shame is pointing at your face.

The monkey in the video didn’t just “feel” friendship; it acted on it. Similarly, a true friend acts in ways that protect, uplift, and empower you. They do not merely promise support—they provide it, even when it comes at a cost.

Let's Examine Characteristics of a True Friend

  • Loyalty: They stick with you through thick and thin. You can feel their connection with you and followership. They render to you what you couldn't do without asking for a return.
  • Honesty: They tell you the truth, even when it hurts. Yes - when it hurts, they draw your attention to things you do that were wrong and put you on the right path. They don't compromise, no, not because they want to please you, but because that's the way it should be, which will be the best for you.
  • Empathy: They feel your pain and rejoice in your happiness. That is what a true friend does, they feel what you feel and be with you when no one cares, they enjoy your moment of Joy with you without envy.
  • Reliability: You can count on them in times of need. A Friend you can't count on shouldn't be your friend. You should be able to rely on your friend in thick and thin. No man has a reliable friend, and does not know it. It's real, it's pure and unconditional.
  • Encouragement: They inspire you to be the best version of yourself. A true friend is your motivator, someone who gives you the moral support needed to attain the heights of life. Even when you cannot do it, they give you reasons why you will succeed when you don't look like it.
  • Sacrifice: They put your well-being above their convenience or comfort when necessary. Giving you their all for your success in life.

I have a friend, my namesake, when I got my first big pay job, he single-handedly sent me hundreds of thousands to change my waldrop to look good and competitive in my appearance upon my resumption. A true friend sacrifices to ensure you attain the best in life.

How to Identify a True Friend

There are many ways to identify a True Friend, but it goes deeper than seeing them around.

True friendship is revealed during trials; many factors can be literally observed during this period, a true friend sticks with you when life tests your Faith, Strength and resilience.

The easiest way to identify a true friend is by observing how they respond when you are in difficulty or when life tries you.

Although some people will stay with you when you’re being tested by the challenges of life, not all of them are genuine. Some may actually be behind your ordeal, yet still appear to comfort you. But there are others—true friends—who will stand by you even when it’s not convenient, making sure you come out of the situation stronger.

You can identify who truly cares for you by consciously observing their actions during your difficult moments; their true nature will always show. Light and darkness can never coexist. The real picture of friendship always reveals itself in times of trial.

Ask yourself: Do they come to your aid when you’re alone and weak? Are they willing to offer practical help when things get tough, even at the cost of their own comfort? True friends are consistent—they remain by your side when life is smooth and when it is stormy. Simple.

Additionally, true friends:

  • Listen without judgment: A friend will always want to hear you and also pacify you where necessary; he won't pass blame or judge you because of what he heard or what people say. They give you a listening ear to pour out your mind.
  • Celebrate your success without envy: We have seen many things happening in our society today, where a friend enviously kills his close friend because he found a huge amount of money in his account. A true friend does not care about what you have or the possessions you obtained, but is clear in their relationship without having envy in them.
  • Speak words that motivate and guide: A word of wisdom that helps you achieve your goal is what comes from a true friend; he won't allow you to take a wrong step that will ruin you.
  • Offer support without expecting repayment: Yes, a true friend will help you without mandating return from you. I have seen a Friend who helped another Friend, and when he became successful, he stood on his neck. This is not the kind of friend we are talking about, but one that supports you without expecting return.

Who are Bad Friends and How to Identify Them

What is bad is bad; this cannot be erased. No, it can't. You can't call black white and the other way round. Identifying a bad friend is significant if you must continue to grow in life.

Not everyone who smiles with you or shares laughter is your true friend. Many people have sat with you, dined with you and still betrayed you.

Identifying bad friends starts from within—it begins with the kind of life you choose to live. Many young men today are surrounded by bad friends without realising it, simply because they share the same lifestyle and values. To truly recognise who is good or bad for you, you must first define the kind of life you want to live. Only then will it become clear who aligns with your purpose and who does not.

Having bad friends can drain your energy, because they know they are not heading towards your direction; therefore, they will distract you from your goals and focus on life, your parents, guidance, husband, and wife's advice will no longer be necessary because their influence has overridden theirs.

Most time, they betray your trust because you are coming from a different angle than what they feel and have in mind towards you.

A bad friend is often characterised by:

  • Self-centeredness: They prioritise their own needs above yours consistently. You can imagine a friend telling you to take a certain dose of drugs for you to feel high, and foolishly, without asking him or her to try it first to see, you end up engaging in it, and at the end, you become uncontrollable. Anytime you see a Friend who asks you to do what he or she has not tried and confirmed before, note that it is a red flag that he or she is a bad friend.
  • Jealousy: They undermine your achievements rather than celebrate them. They can't celebrate your achievements; rather, they talk them away. The young men should understand this and be careful in associating themselves with such friends. Your achievements that is being condemned by someone who speaks negatively about your success, saying, "e.g. Are you the first to achieve it?" It is a bad friend, that is jealousy, and it's a Red flag.
  • Unreliability: They disappear during your moments of need. You can imagine a student who lied to another friend to smoke in a secret place, and noticed a step and immediately left you in the scene, leaving you to bear the consequences, and you are still calling the same friend? These are the red flags you must note in identifying a bad friend
  • Manipulation: They use your trust for their personal gain. We have many people who are currently in this mess and are still keeping such a relationship. Someone asks you to apply for a loan on his behalf, and after collecting the funds, refuses to pay, and in the end, you still end up paying the money in the name of friendship, but still come around saying, " What are friends for"? And you are still keeping such? That is a Red flag on his own because such a friend is a manipulator.

Identifying bad friends is crucial because their influence can harm your growth and emotional well-being. If you don't shine your eyes, you will soon end up in the grave while they are still enjoying life.

Who is a Betrayer and How to Identify a Betrayed Friend

A betrayed friend is everywhere, but if you don't know your worth, you will be caught in the web. A betrayed friend is someone who once seemed genuine but eventually chooses personal interest over loyalty.

This type of friend knows in their heart that they will betray you even before it happens. One major red flag is their curiosity about the most important things in your life. They may seem supportive, cheering you on and helping you succeed, but it’s often with an ulterior motive. Once they achieve what they want, they quietly turn away.

The key points highlighted are very insightful:

  1. Pre-betrayal awareness – Often, such people have a sense in their heart that they will act selfishly or betray, even if it’s not overt yet. Their intentions aren’t fully aligned with your well-being.

  2. Curiosity disguised as support – They show interest in your life or achievements, but it’s not genuine care. They are gauging opportunities to benefit themselves, sometimes waiting for the right moment to act in their favour.

  3. Conditional support – They may actively encourage or help you, but it’s transactional. Once their personal goals are met, they withdraw or abandon the friendship.

A practical takeaway: observe consistency over time. Genuine friends rejoice in your success without hidden motives. Red flags like excessive curiosity in your personal matters, or support that vanishes after they get what they want, should make you cautious.

Signs of betrayal can include:

Sharing your secrets without consent: Some of the friends you have as a companion are the ones killing you without knowing by exposing your secrets. I noted earlier that some friends will be by you on the day of the challenge, but they are the ones behind it. The betrayal will stand by you, knowing fully well its intentions. And at a time you need them to speak for you or stand as a witness, they vanish. You must be careful of this.

Speaking against you behind your back: This is common among betrayers; you must identify the company of friends around you; otherwise, they will sell you out before you wake up from your slumber. Bad people talk about you behind and you know what! It's a round misconception about you which will hurt you in the end because it's not true. They are the same people who will come and tell you what another person said, to constantly trying to gain your trust. You must beware of them.

Failing to defend you when others speak ill of you: Betrayal won't defend you when people are talking ill of you. Even to your face, they will remain quiet even at a time you expect them to talk. I have once been in this scenario where a group of conspirators lied to my face, and I called the people around me, including the assistant, who kept mute, and I couldn't help the situation. Betrayal is like a forest seen from afar, but entering it, you become lost.

Abandoning you during your crisis: You will be left alone; they usually turn their back on you. Even when they know what to say because of their selfish interests, and try to be good in the sight of others. They are like a servant who eats and dines with the Rich man, and on the day of death, they run away.

While betrayal is painful, recognising it allows you to protect your heart and surround yourself with authentic relationships.

Benefits of Having True Friends and Disadvantages of Bad Friends

Having a true friend is life-transforming. The benefits are immense: A true friend gives you all you need to attain your height in life with moral support.

  • Emotional support: True friends provide comfort and understanding in tough times. When you have good people around you to give you emotional support, your strength is automatically built, and this will accelerate your success in life.
  • Motivation and growth: They push you to become a better version of yourself. A true friend gives motivation, which enhances growth in life. When you are motivated by the people who are yours, achieving goals will be walk over.
  • Trust and loyalty: They are a safe harbour in a world that can often feel unpredictable. A trusted and loyal friend makes you a visionary to keep claiming without having any thoughts of falling because you have a passionate and trustworthy loyal friend.
  • Shared joy: Every celebration becomes brighter with someone who genuinely cares. A true friend shares your Joy without envy or strife. This gives you moral and ethical avenues to achieve more goals

On the other hand, bad friends bring disadvantages:

  • Stress and disappointment: Their inconsistency causes emotional turmoil. You can't avoid keeping such a traumatic moment, so it's advised to identify your true friends and discard the bad ones.
  • Negative influence: They may lead you into poor decisions or toxic behaviour. Once you are not going their way, you will automatically be misled in your quest in life.
  • Betrayal: They can betray your trust, leaving emotional scars. That is why you need to be sensitive in every approach in your journey in life, watch your back as often as you can to avoid being betrayed.
  • Wasted time: Investing in superficial friendships drains energy that could be spent nurturing meaningful relationships.

A profound lesson on friendship.

True friendship is active, not passive. It is about courage, loyalty, and selflessness. It reminds us that a friend is not just someone to laugh with, but someone willing to step into the fray when danger arises. Someone is ready to defend you even when you are not present.

From this, we learn:

1. Friendship is tested in times of danger: Challenges reveal who truly stands by you.

2. Courage and sacrifice define loyalty: True friends put their friend’s well-being above their comfort.

3. Action matters more than words: Saying “I’m here for you” is easy; being there physically, emotionally, and mentally is the real test.

How to Practice Being a True Friend

To cultivate true friendship, one must embody the qualities of loyalty, honesty, empathy, and selflessness. Here are ways to practice it:

  • Be present: Make time for your friends, especially in difficult times. The trusted one among others. Let your impact be felt genuinely without compromise.
  • Listen actively: Understand their struggles without rushing to judgment. Passing judgment at first sight can destroy and traumatise the other. Listen to their side of the story, carefully understand their purpose and never condemn at any instance.
  • Offer help genuinely: Sometimes support is not about advice but about showing up. Be sure to be supportive in proof and deed. Be their helping hand, accommodate everything they do and be part of it.
  • Celebrate sincerely: Be genuinely happy for their achievements without envy. Learn to be part of others' celebrations and not with mockery.
  • Maintain trust: Keep confidences, honour commitments, and stay loyal. Be trustworthy in your dealings with others and remain so.

True friendship is a two-way street. By being a genuine friend, you attract those who will reciprocate your loyalty, creating bonds that endure life’s storms.
