President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Appoints New Service Chiefs: A Fresh Line-up for Nigeria’s Security Architecture

In a high-profile move to strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named a new set of service chiefs and security leaders — a line-up expected to refocus operations, improve intelligence-sharing, and accelerate reforms across the defence and security services.


The appointments, released by the State House and publicized on the Presidency’s official channels, identify the following leaders as Nigeria’s newly appointed service chiefs:


Lieutenant General O.O. Oluyede — Chief of Defence Staff

Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye — Chief of Defence Intelligence

Major General W. Shaibu — Chief of Army Staff

Rear Admiral I. Abbas — Chief of Naval Staff

Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke — Chief of Air Staff


President Tinubu said the selections were made with the urgency of current security challenges in mind and called on the new chiefs to prioritize intelligence-led operations, protection of civilians, and collaborative inter-agency approaches. “These appointments are about results and restoring confidence,” the Presidency’s release emphasized.


Security analysts welcomed the refresh but urged that new faces be accompanied by measurable changes in strategy and accountability. Civil society groups reiterated the need for operations that respect human rights and transparently report progress against insecurity hotspots such as insurgency-affected regions, banditry corridors, and maritime threats.


The new chiefs have officially assumed duty and pledged allegiance to the constitution, promising to work together to tackle the complex and evolving security threats facing Nigeria. Observers will be watching early operational moves — tasking, redeployments, and intelligence reforms — as the clearest signals of how the new leadership intends to deliver results.
